The estuary is strongly dominated by the Gulf of Maine, and its unique geology creates the warm, food-rich conditions in the upper part of the river perfect for oysters. The oysters were highly prized by native Americans long before Europeans arrived and now, thanks to modern aquaculture, Damariscotta River oysters are coveted by oyster lovers everywhere.
